Introduction

Reaching global climate targets is a major responsibility of the Kingdom. The Saudi Green Initiative is laying the groundwork for a more environmentally friendly future by encouraging investment and action across the entire society.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made significant progress toward a more sustainable future since the 2016 introduction of Vision 2030. With the primary objectives of offsetting and lowering emissions, increasing afforestation and land restoration, and safeguarding the Kingdom's land and sea, SGI was established in 2021 and integrates environmental protection, energy transition, and sustainability programs.

Long-term, sustainable climate action plan implementation is being led by SGI. Reducing emissions, reforestation, and land regeneration, and protecting land and seas are the three main goals that drive SGI's activities. Eighty-plus initiatives have been activated since the launch of SGI in 2021, and advancements are made daily.

More than 80 initiatives have been launched by Saudi Arabia to help meet the three goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and bring about long-lasting improvement. The projects include everything from creating new protected areas and reducing emissions to afforestation and biodiversity preservation. With the support of SGI, Saudi Arabia is fulfilling its ambition to make the future more environmentally friendly for everyone and is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development through investment and action.

What is the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI)?

The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), an ambitious national initiative for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was launched in 2021 with the goals of halting climate change, enhancing living standards, and safeguarding the environment for coming generations.

To meet the three main goals of afforestation, emissions reduction, and land and sea protection, SGI mobilizes all societal engines. Currently, 77 projects are being carried out, which adds up to a substantial investment in the green economy.

Saudi Arabia has fulfilled its global commitments and its ambitions to combat climate change, with tangible results since the establishment of SGI in 2021.
